Annotated Bbliography

For this blog post, I am going to do an annotated bibliography on 4 credible scholarly sources. These 4 sources explain the content of reality television like “The Bachelor and Bachelorette”. They explain information of the effects of reality television, like “slut-shaming” for example. And what led some of the contenders of “The Bachelor and Bachelorette” to commit suicide.

Potter, James W. "Perceived Reality in Television Effects Research." Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media. N.p., n.d. Web. 18 Apr. 2017.

My first source I will be talking about is, “Perceived Reality in Television Effects Research” by W. James Potter. Quoted from the source its says, “The results about gender are mixed. Greenberg and Dominick (1969) reported that females had higher perceptions of reality than their male counterparts” (Potter 31). I feel like this means that in reality television shows, females were the ones who people had more judgment on then the males. The main point of this source is about the perceptions, beliefs, and opinion that everyone’s has on reality television. Also the effects reality television has on our society. This source connects to my artifact because; the viewer’s perceptions of the contenders on “The Bachelor and Bachelorette” can affect the contenders. The people involved on any reality TV show, are constantly being judge on how they act. For example, if one of the woman on “The Bachelor” does one small thing to get a mans attention, she’s considered a “slut”, and then that’s when Social Media comes into place with hurtful comments. This could be one of the reasons why suicide is triggered. This source allows me to discuss the perceptions of people in reality TV shows, and the effects it has on them and the viewers.

Zurbriggen, Eileen L., and Elizabeth M. Morgan. "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire? Reality Dating Television Programs, Attitudes Toward Sex, and Sexual Behaviors." SpringerLink. Kluwer Academic Publishers-Plenum Publishers, n.d. Web. 18 Apr. 2017.

My second source is, “Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire? Reality Dating Television Programs, Attitudes Toward Sex, and Sexual Behaviors” by Elieen L. Zurbriggen and Elizabeth M. Morgan. “Reality programs such as RDP’s might have stronger effects than more scripted programs such as situation comedies or soap operas” (Zurbriggen & Morgan, 2). This means that, since its reality it has more effects on the viewers because it “real life” situations that people can relate to, can have different reactions to, etc.  The general point of this source is, what the viewer’s attitudes are toward sex and sexual behavior in reality television.  This connects to my artifact because; the viewers who watch “The Bachelor and Bachelorette” (especially the younger viewers) look at sex and sexual behavior to be the way it is displayed on reality TV. For example, how the girls act on the show to attract the man to make herself appealing to the man. Therefore this will allow you to understand that some girls may be called out on how they deliver their sexuality to the man, some people may judge woman the way the act in that way.

Ferris, Amber L., Sandi W. Smith, and Stacy L. Smith. "The Content of Reality Dating Shows and Viewer Perceptions of Dating." Journal of Communication. Wiley-Blackwell, 27 Oct. 2015. Web. 19 Apr. 2017.
My third source is called, “The Content of Reality Dating Shows and Viewer Perceptions of Dating” by Amber L. Ferris. Mentioned in the article, “Because these shows are marked as reality television and present real-life (although produced and edited) portrayals of dating situations and interactions, the content and possible effects of these shows deserve attention” (Ferris 491). When I read this, it means to me that many people are always analyzing anything or any involvement with the show. Meaning, the show is going to get a lot of attention (like the suicides), there’s going to be many reviews on it, and that’s how it connects to my artifact. This source discusses the content of reality shows and the viewer’s perspectives on them.

Tate, Elisa. "Challenging Women's Digital Agency: The Frequency of Slut Shaming in Social Media." The IJournal: Graduate Student Journal of the Faculty of Information. N.p., n.d. Web. 19 Apr. 2017.

My last source is, “Challenging Women’s Digital Agency: The Frequency of Slut Shaming in Social Media” by Elisa Tate. “Although woman are active users on social media spaces, those who express feminist ideals frequently become targets of slut shaming” (Tate 37).  This explains those women who embrace their sexual are labeled as sluts.  And that’s what this sources main point is. This connects to my artifact and will let to discuss, that how the viewers may target the woman and how they act on the show. I’ve followed some on the contenders on “The Bachelor and Bachelorette”, and I’ve seen some of the comments that people post on their page.  There are so many hurtful comments the viewers leave expressing how “slutty” they have acted on the show. This is why some of the contenders became depressed, because on the cyber bullying. And this is what leads them to commit suicide.

Perceptions on Reality Dating Shows

Ferris, Amber L., Sandi W. Smith, Bradley S. Greenberg, and Stacy L. Smith. "The Content of Reality Dating Shows and Viewer Perceptions of Dating." N.p., n.d. Web.

For this blog, I picked and article based on my topic to review. Since my topic is about “The Bachelor and Bachelorette” suicides, I picked an article about reality TV dating shows. I feel like this article will help me a lot with this topic because I can get deeper into the reality show world. The article I picked is called, “The Content of Reality Dating Shows and Viewer Perceptions of Dating”.  This article talks about reality dating shows and how we take on the characteristics of males and females on the show. Just because the show is reality, doesn’t mean that all mean and woman act while dating, and that’s explained in the article because of how the younger viewers see it. “The Bachelor”, is actually mentioned in this article. “ ABC’s The Bachelor, a show where 25 woman compete for one man’s hand in marriage, is now in its eighth season, and it still attracting a large audience. In January 2006, The Bachelor beat out such popular shows as The West Wing, Will & Grace, and ER with nearly 8 million viewers.” (Ferris 490). This particular reality show has very high ratings and is watched millions of people, including me. It also mentions that, “ The Bachelor is one of the many reality dating shows in the United States geared toward young adults.” (Ferris 490). This is one of the reasons why most of the younger generations have their perceptions on dating, because they’ll see shows like “The Bachelor” and think that that’s how couples date in “actual” reality.  Another thing the author mentions is that, “Singles on dating shows also may be seen as a peer group (Strasburger, 1995), if the participants on dating shows are seen as “real people”, not celebrities or actors. Therefore, viewers may identify more with reality dating show characters then fictional drama characters.” (Ferris 491).  This example explains that, the participants on the show are not celebrities. They are normal people who happened to be filmed without acting or following a scripted, so everything you see and how they act is reality. Another thing the article mentions is that researchers results show that the males see woman as sexual objects whose value is based on physical appearance. This may cause the younger viewers to focus more on looks and how they may be attractive to a persons physical, then focusing more on the personality aspect or a person. Looks aren’t everything! Researchers also say that men are sex-driven on most reality dating shows, so dating is portrayed as a game or competition. This can cause younger males to think competing for a girl is “cool” just so they feel like a winner, when that’s the wrong thing to do because its not fair to the girl. This article did include methods such as, content analysis, sampling procedures, and training and reliability. Content analysis basically talked about samples of 64 hour taped reality dating shows of U.S. produced and broadcasted. Sampling procedures talks about the first 33 hours of reality dating shows coming from a large program sample were shows were randomly selected from 18 different channels between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. to build a composite week of television content. Training and reliability talked about, training sessions being conducted over a 15 hour span using a variety of episodes of shows from the same series as in the constructed sample.

Results:

Content Analysis: “Four coders determined the presence or absence of the dating attitudes (Ward 200), the characteristics with which people might choose dates (Hestroni, 200), as well as behaviors that might be included in first-date scripts” (Rose & Frieze, 1989).

Sampling Procedures: “Thirty-three hours of reality dating shows were found on seven channels (CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, UPN, WB, MTV) in the first sampling. To increase the database, all reality dating shows were taped on randomly selected dates between July 1 and November 13, 2003. The total sample consisted 64 hours of reality dating shows from 18 different series” (Ferris 496).

Training and Reliability: “ Using Potter and Levine-Donnersyain’s (1999) formula for multiple coders that corrects agreement by chance, the ranges of final reliability coefficients were as follows: attitudes (.82-1.0), reward/punishment (.86-.94), behaviors (1.0), and dating characteristics (.76-.85). After these reliability results were obtained, the 64 sample shows were analyzed” (Ferris 496).

This article is very useful and credible. Even though it wasn’t about “The Bachelor and Bachelorette” suicides, this article gave me a better understanding on reality dating shows and people’s perspectives on dating. This article will help me a lot, there are a lot of facts and information I can use from this article in my essay. I agree with a lot of what was mentioned in the article and how people view reality shows, and what they this is “actual reality” in the shows.

Reality TV

I am going to be talking about something that is very interesting, shocking, and something I never heard about. For this blog post I’m going to be talking about a topic I picked to research.  The topic I picked is on the reality show, “The Bachelor and Bachelorette”.  I am going talk about how some of the contestants on the show committed suicide after they appeared on the show.  Hearing about this shocked me, I love watching “The Bachelor and The Bachelorette”, but I never knew any of the contestants committed suicide.  “The Bachelor and Bachelorette”, is a reality dating TV show on the network “ABC”.  On this show 1 woman dates 25 men (“The Bachelorette”) and 1 male dates 25 woman (The Bachelor”).  The point of this show is that the male and female hope to end up engaged at the end and find their “true love”.  This show have become very popular, most of the engaged  And then there is always that one that is everyone’s favorite, and the one you want to get picked at the end of the show. Analyzing this show, there are many people that come on the show that makes this show very diverse. This show is for men and woman, but mostly woman watch it. There are many different people from different backgrounds, different races, and different social classes that go on the show. Some people are unfortunate and don’t have an easy life. Most of all, everyone who becomes about of the show is just trying to find true love, as they say. Today, this topic is reality, people try to find love every day, people have drama in their lives, we all going through great times and hard times in our live. This show basically displays the life people live and what they go through in day by day. The research I done for this topic, is that I found articles that talk about the people who were on, “The Bachelor and Bachelorette”, have committed suicide or had suffered from depression after the show.  I researched why they committed, and why they where thinking about it.  I found out the names of the people, and what season of the show they were on.  I still need to a little more research but I’m excited to talk about this topic. I’m excited to share this with people who are fans of the show. This is all reality; even people that are not on the show go through all theses things in their life, and even something as serious as depression and suicide.
couples and contestants end up becoming famous. There is a bunch of drama in this show of course, and they always have the one woman or man that everybody dislikes because of hoe they act on the show.

Orlando Strong

For this blog post I’m blogging about two articles that connect to the same topic. Although one of the article involve my main topic (dance) but it mainly focuses on a tragic event that happened in the world very recently. The topic I’m going to be blogging is about the Orlando nightclub shooting. The shooting happened on June 12, 2016 at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. 49 people were killed and 53 people were wounded.  The two articles I picked for this topic are both from, “teatlantic.com” news source.  My first article is, “Sia’s Wonderful and Sad Music Video for Orlando”.  This article was about the singer Sia’s song “The Greatest”. If you seen any of Sia’s videos like her “Chandelier” or “Elastic Heart” videos, dancer Maddie Ziegler dances in them. When I first seen these two Sia videos, I was so confused but I noticed as a dancer Maddie is telling a story through her dancing which is basically the story of the Sia’s song. Sia’s songs and the dancing in her videos have so much meaning to them, for example in the article it says,” She’s the pop star of inscrutable meaning but unmistakable emotion, of inspirational slogans applicable to nearly any situation, of wigs and flesh-toned leotards and cute every kids doing dance moves that resemble mundane life remixed in a dream” (Kornhaber 1).  In Sia’s song “The Greatest”, many people picked up that the dancers in the video delivered them a story about the Orlando mascara.  “ There are 49 young dancers on the screen. Their leader, Maddie Ziegler, paints rainbows on her face. At the end, everyone falls down in what seems to be a nightclub, revealing what looks like a bullet-riddled wall.” (Kornharber 1).  Even though Sia did write this song before the mascara happened, I feel like she dedicated to those who were killed and wounded during this devastating event. That’s the thing about not only dance but music as well, you can so much with it and make a difference.  When I saw the video I really just thought it looked like Maddie was just trying to tell everyone not to give up, and to keep pushing yourself. But after reading this article I understand the concept of the massacre in the video, it makes more sense now.  The second article, “ Worldwide vigils and Memorials for Orlando Victims”, is also about the Orlando shooting. This article is about the shooting and the memorials dedicated to those who were killed and those who were injured. In this article it states, “Memorials and candlelight vigils took place in parks and plazas around the world, with citizens and government officials voicing support the victims and their families, as monuments were lit in rainbow colors, and flags lowered to half-staff”. (Taylor 1). Both of these articles connect talking about the shooting in Orlando. They also both talk about the support and dedication the world gave to show love and support. Its sad that there’s so much hate in the world but its incredible at times when these tragic event take place, were there for each other, support each other, and love each other.  All the tragic events that happened in the past like 9/11, the Sandy Hook school shooting, Boston Marathon bombing, the attack in Paris and many more, We all came together and showed that our country will stay strong .
