For this blog post, I'm
going to do a rhetorical analysis on an article. The article has to do with
dance, of course. The article I picked is, " Walk, Stretch, or Dance?
Dancing May Be Best for the Brain". I picked this article because it the
author uses the rhetorical strategies of ethos, pathos, logos, tone, and style
in this article. This article is basically about a new study that determines
that dancing and learning choreography can protect brain cells from aging.
Reading this article, I can tell the author wrote it for a older audience, or
even scientist and psychologist. This article actually caught my attention. I
think the authors purpose is to educate the reader about the brain and what
best to keep you and your brain cells healthy. In the article it says," So
for the new study, which was published this month in Frontiers in Aging
Neuroscience, researchers from the University of Illinois in Urbana and other
schools decided to look at the effects of several different types of exercise
on the wiring and the function of older people's brain." (Reynolds, 2).
This piece from the article shows the author use of ethos by mentioning,
Frontiers and the University of Illinois, the author was name dropping. The use
of pathos in this article, I would say is serious but a good serious because
the author is informing you with something that beneficial. The authors uses
logos everywhere in this article. For example, " They began to recruiting 174
heathy people in their 60s and 70s with no signs of cognitive impairment. Most
were sedentary, although some occasionally exercised." (Reynolds, 2). The
author using the number of people (174) in their 60s and 70s is an example of
logos in this article because they are providing you with numbers. I feel like
the authors use of ethos, pathos, and logos convinces you that dancing is good
for you brain cells, they give you all the reasons and back them up with facts.
The authors tone appeals to the audience because its very informative and they
were smart to use it in the title as well.
